How much does a website redesign cost in New Zealand?
There is no official price list for websites in New Zealand. What exists are the ranges that web firms publish on their own sites. This guide sets those out, in each firm's own wording, and explains what pushes a quote up or down.
Short answer
Published New Zealand figures range from about $800 for a template rebuild (one firm's price, including GST and first-year hosting) to tens of thousands for complex or e-commerce sites. One firm lists business websites at $3,000 to $15,000 plus GST; another lists $2,500 to $10,000. All the sources below sell websites, so treat their figures as marketing, not independent research.
A warning about the sources
Every figure on this page comes from a New Zealand business that sells websites. None of them is independent research. Firms have reasons to publish figures that make their own prices look reasonable, and the ranges they publish are often wide. We include them because they are the best public information available, not because they are neutral.
Repagevia also sells redesigns, which is a commercial interest of our own. We do not include our own prices in this guide; how we quote is explained on a separate page.
The figures were checked on 3 November 2026. Prices change, so check the source pages before relying on them.
What New Zealand firms publish
Meta Digital
Meta Digital's article "How Much Does a Website Cost in NZ in 2026?", published on 10 August 2026, opens by saying a professionally built business website "typically lands somewhere between $3,000 and $15,000 plus GST"1. Its table reads as follows:
| Type of website | Typical 2026 range (excl. GST) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| DIY or template site | $0 to $4,000 | Getting online fast, testing an idea, very tight budgets |
| Small business site (5 to 8 pages) | $5,000 to $15,000+ | Established businesses that need credibility and enquiries |
| Custom lead-generating site | $9,000 to $30,000+ | Businesses where the website is a core sales channel |
| eCommerce or complex build | $15,000 to $50,000+ | Selling online, integrations, large catalogues, custom features |
For running costs, the article says to "expect professional hosting and maintenance to run from around $40 to $150+ a month"1.
The same article's FAQ section gives a different figure for a small business site of five to eight pages: "between $4,000 and $8,000 plus GST"1. The source does not explain the difference between its table and its FAQ. We report both rather than choosing one.
Disclose Media
Disclose Media's page "How much does website design cost in New Zealand?", last modified on 8 October 2024, gives these ranges2:
| Type of site | Published range |
|---|---|
| Business website | $2,500 to $10,000 |
| Basic 5-page website | $2,500 to $5,000 |
| E-commerce website without product integration | $2,500 to $5,000 |
The page is older than the others, so its figures may not reflect current pricing.
Impact Websites
Impact Websites' page "How Much Does a Website Cost? NZ Prices" lists fixed prices that include GST3:
| Offer | Published price |
|---|---|
| Website rebuild | From $799, including first-year hosting |
| New website | $1,199 |
| Online store | From $1,399 |
| Hosting from year two | $324 per year |
These are template-based packages from one provider. They show the low end of the market, where a site is built on a standard design with limited custom work.
Why the ranges are so wide
A "website" can mean a three-page template or a store with thousands of products connected to stock and accounting systems. The ranges above stretch across that whole spectrum. A redesign of an existing site adds its own variables, mainly how much content and how many addresses need to move.
What drives the cost of a redesign
Number of page types
Designing ten pages that share one layout costs far less than designing ten unique pages. Count your page types, not your pages: home, service, product, blog post, contact, about and so on.
Content
Reusing existing content is cheapest. Rewriting it costs more. Writing from scratch costs the most. Many quotes exclude copywriting, so check.
Migration
A site with thirty pages needs a short redirect map. A store with several thousand products needs a large, carefully tested one. If search traffic matters to your business, budget for this work. Google's site move guidance describes the steps involved, including mapping old addresses to new ones and keeping redirects running for a year or more4.
Features and integrations
Online booking, payments, member areas and connections to other software all add work. Each integration needs to be set up and tested.
Platform
Staying on your current platform usually costs less than moving. A platform change may be worth it, but it adds migration work.
Ongoing costs
Hosting, domain renewal, software licences and maintenance continue after launch. Meta Digital's figure of around $40 to $150+ a month for hosting and maintenance gives one indication1. Ask every designer what ongoing costs to expect.
GST and comparing quotes
Some firms quote including GST and some exclude it. In the sources above, Impact Websites' prices include GST and Meta Digital's exclude it3,1. A $10,000 quote plus GST and a $10,000 quote including GST are different amounts, so always check which basis a quote uses before comparing.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Send every designer the same brief. Our free redesign planner produces one.
- Ask each quote to list what is included and what is not.
- Check whether content writing, redirects, accessibility testing and post-launch support are included.
- Check who owns the design and code after the final payment.
- Check the payment stages and what happens if the scope changes.
- Check whether prices include or exclude GST.
A low quote that excludes migration and content can end up costing more than a higher quote that includes them. Our guide to web design contracts covers what to look for in the written agreement.
Is a cheap template rebuild enough?
For some businesses, yes. A sole trader with a handful of pages and little search traffic may be well served by a template package. The risks rise with the size of the site and the value of its existing search traffic. If your current site brings in a meaningful share of your enquiries through search, make sure any rebuild includes a redirect plan, whatever its price.
Budgeting tips
- Keep some budget in reserve for things the audit reveals.
- Get content ready early. Delays waiting for content are a common cause of extra cost.
- Consider staging the work: key pages first, the rest later.
- Ask whether any work could be done in-house, such as writing or gathering photos.
Cost questions
Why do website prices vary so much in New Zealand?
Because "a website" covers everything from a small template site to a complex store. The published ranges above reflect that spread. A detailed brief is the best way to get comparable quotes.
Are these prices for redesigns or new sites?
Most published figures are for building a site, whether new or a rebuild. A redesign may cost more than a new site of the same size if it involves a large migration, or less if most content is reused.
Should I choose the cheapest quote?
Not on price alone. Compare what each quote includes, particularly migration, content, testing and ongoing costs. The cheapest option can cost more if search traffic is lost or work has to be redone.
