Website redesign guides

Practical guides for New Zealand business owners planning a redesign. Each one cites its sources, and the legal guides are general information, not legal advice.

Planning and budgeting

Start here if you are deciding whether to redesign and what it will involve.

Signs you need a redesign

How to tell a site that needs rebuilding from one that needs a tidy-up or a few targeted fixes.

Content audit guide

List every page, gather the figures and decide what to keep, merge, rewrite or retire.

Redesign cost guide

Price ranges published by New Zealand web firms, in their own words, and what moves the figure.

Migration and measurement

These guides cover the technical side of keeping search traffic and measuring what changed.

Redirect mapping guide

How to pair every old address with its new home, which redirect types to use and how to test them.

Measuring a redesign

How to record a baseline, what to compare after launch and how to avoid misreading early swings.

Core Web Vitals guide

What LCP, INP and CLS measure, the good thresholds, and the fixes that usually help most.

Accessibility, claims, privacy and contracts

The rules that apply to a business website in New Zealand, explained in plain terms with links to the primary sources.

WCAG 2.2 guide

What WCAG 2.2 adds, who in New Zealand must follow it and the checks worth making in any redesign.

Website claims guide

How the rule on unsubstantiated claims applies to headlines, reviews and results figures on your site.

Privacy and forms guide

Privacy notices, the new IPP 3A, overseas storage, breaches and email consent, for sites that collect details.

Web design contracts guide

Scope, payments, ownership and the consumer and contract laws that apply when hiring a web designer.

How these guides are written

Every guide is written by Lily Morris, the pen name used by Repagevia's editor. Facts are checked against primary sources where they exist, such as legislation, regulators and official platform documentation. When a fact comes from a secondary source, for instance a law firm's commentary or a web firm's price page, the source list flags it.

Guides that touch on law are general information for New Zealand businesses. They are not legal advice, and they cannot cover every situation. If a decision carries legal risk, speak to a lawyer.

We review each guide when the sources it relies on change, and at least once a year. Each guide carries its last-updated date just under the headline. Our editorial policy explains how we choose topics, check facts and handle corrections.

A note on our interest

Repagevia sells website redesign services, and these guides sit on our website. We try to keep them useful whether or not you hire us: they explain how to do things yourself, what to ask any designer and when a redesign is not needed. Each guide has a sidebar box and a call-to-action band about our services, and an occasional in-body link to a service where it is relevant.

Suggest a topic

If there is a question about redesigning a New Zealand business website that these guides do not answer, email hello@repagevia.site. We read every suggestion, although we cannot promise to write about every topic.

How to use the guides

The guides follow the order a redesign usually takes. If you are only starting to think about a new site, read the guide to the signs your website needs a redesign, then the content audit guide. Once a redesign is agreed, the redirect mapping and measurement guides help you protect what the old site already earns. The accessibility, claims, privacy and contracts guides can be read at any point, and are worth a look before new copy or a new contact form goes live.

Each guide opens with a short answer box for readers in a hurry, and a list of contents for longer reading. Sources are listed at the end, numbered in the order they first appear.

If you only have ten minutes, the short answer box at the top of each guide gives you the gist, and the free planner turns what you learn into a brief.

Questions about the guides

Can I share or quote these guides?

You are welcome to link to any guide. Short quotes with a link back are fine. Please do not republish whole guides.

Are the guides legal advice?

No. They are general information for New Zealand businesses. For advice about your own situation, speak to a lawyer.

How do I report a mistake?

Email hello@repagevia.site with the page and the problem. We check every report and correct confirmed errors promptly, noting significant corrections on the page.
